Description
(Computational) social choice consists in designing, analysing and implementing collective decision mechanisms. This talk focuses on two of its specific problems:
- portioning: given a global resource (typically, money or time), and several expenditure items, find an optimal and fair way of dividing the resource among them.
- participatory budgeting can be seen as a discrete variant of portioning: given a set of projects, each of which with a cost, a budget limit, and citizens' preferences expressed by votes, find an optimally fair selection of projects
I will introduce the two problems mostly through examples and present a few different mechanisms, together with their properties.
